Engaging Gospel Doctrine

“Then Will I Gather Them In”

Am I correct in concluding that these chapters fall in that category of scripture that most members read without comprehension? When we think “Isaiah chapters” 2 Nephi comes to mind, but 3 Nephi has its share as well, with some Micah thrown in.

These chapters in brief talk about how in the latter days Israel (including the descendants of the Nephites) will overthrow the Gentiles if they don’t repent. If you noticed that was in the Book of Mormon, well done.

In this lesson we will explore

  • How we can apply these chapters as individuals and societies–in this scriptural choose your own adventure, are we moving towards Zion or destruction?
  • The idea of “salvation history” including its presentation in the Book of Mormon
  • The role of “Israel and Gentiles” in the last days
  • Conditional prophecies and promises in these chapters
  • Worship: the sacrament and prayer
  • The Biblical context of these passages

One Response to “214: Gathering and Scattering (BoM Gospel Doctrine Lesson 40)”

  1. Bryan Says:

while listening to this podcast, during the discussion about worship I remembered this scripture.
3 Nephi 18:13 But whoso among you shall do more or less than these are not built upon my rock, but are built upon a sandy foundation; and when the rain descends, and the floods come, and the winds blow, and beat upon them, they shall fall, and the gates of hell are ready open to receive them.
So I think that the original sacrament that Jesus showed to the Nephites is enough. No need for the “Show” that other religions put on as it said in 1 Nephi:
1 Nephi 13 8 And the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold the gold, and the silver, and the silks, and the scarlets, and the fine-twined linen, and the precious clothing, and the harlots, are the desires of this great and abominable church.
So I am glad that the LDS church is ‘Plain and Precious’ for the sacrament worship that I get to partake in.
    Thanks.
